Stereotype Threat - 971 Words

How have my own experiences conforming to stereotypes equipped me to deal with stereotype threats that may be present in my sessions with students as a Speaking Fellow? My past is inundated with the roles I have adopted. As the single female in a combat unit in the military this stereotype manifested as I forfeited my femininity to become one of the boys. I had no desire to be seen as a woman who needed to be coddled (as the men I served with presumed) so I assumed the role of tomboy, eating as they, sporting baggy, unfitted pants to cover my womanly curves, and sacrificing my use of silverware in my efforts to be â€Å"just one of the guys.† As I matriculated to Barnard, my identity changed again. Barnard’s slogan is â€Å"bold, beautiful,†¦show more content†¦The anxiety that manifests in increased heart rate, nervous ticks, or lack of focus is typical for those who are suffer from stereotype threat. Talking about the anxiety they feel, and explaining wh y the distraction is occurring is a helpful strategy in regulating and removing the angst. As a Speaking Fellow, the feedback that one provides to their student can significantly affect the student’s motivation and domain identification. Constructive feedback appears most effective when it communicates high standards for performance while assuring the student that they are able to meet those standards. As mentors we can play active roles in eradicating stereotype threat by appreciating the diversity of our students, and embracing their contrasting identities. As my identity continually changes so too does my individuality as a speaker. As a soldier my once loud, argumentative, and confident identity diminished as I did not want to stand out. As a teenager I had been an overwhelming presence that sucked all the energy out of a room. But this new me wanted none of that. And then there is the young woman that I have become, the bold Barnard woman, who voices her opinions, and embraces her femininity. Oedipus the King Essay Thesis Oedipus is a man of accepting his responsibilities and acting on them. Being a man of action, accepts his responsibility of a son and leaves home attempting to avoid his faith which consists of the murder of his father and marriage to his mother. As king he accepts his responsibility of the uncovering of the murder of King Laius. The search for the murderer leads to nothing but a discovery of regrettable action and literally a blinding truth. A truth that was better left undiscovered. Oedipus discovers that he murdered King Laius and married his mother Jocasta. His discovery yet innocent at heart leads to his realization that he is guilty of one thing, trying to change his own faith. Oedipus the King is a man of responsible action, but has an uncontrollable curiosity which hurts him in the end. Oedipus accepts his duties as king and tries to end the plague in Thebes. Then Ill go back and drag that shadowed past to light. Oh, yes the pious Apollo and your piety have set on foot a duty to the dead: A search that you and I together will pursue. My designs could not be suited more: to avenge the god and Thebes in a single blow. Ah! Not for any far-flung friend, but by myself and for myself Ill break this plague. It shows that he is taking responsibility for being king, vengeful to the god, persistent in pursuit for the murderer, but most of all selfish. Oedipus says himself in this line Not for any far-flung friend, but myself and for myself Ill break this plague. Oedipus is acting noble in avenging the former kings death, but his first sign of selfishness protrudes out this line. Oedipus action of avenging the kings death and breaking the plague is the chance for him to be proved as a great king. Oedipus finds out from the oracle in his childhood town Corinth that he will murder his father and marry his mother. Oedipus being just and reasonable does not want this to occur, so he leaves Corinth. Oedipus tries to deny his own faith by leaving home. Oedipus proves to be selfish by not accepting his own fate. Apart from what he was fated to do, he does not want to do accept his faith and leaves. Some say these actions maybe, innocent. Who would want to murder their own father, let along marry your mother? It was his curiosity of wanting to know his own faith. It is not his choice to change it and he is guilty of that. His action of leaving innocent, but the Oedipus not accepting his faith which he desired is selfish. Oedipus persistence and curiosity overpowered reason. In the First Episode on page 226 Tiresias the blind oracle say Id rather keep you and me from harm. Dont press me uselessly. My lips are sealed. Tiresias consciously tries to cover up the knowledge Oedipus desires, but eventually sets the knowledge free. Oedipus curiosity and persistence lead him to the beginning of his own doom. Oedipus actions stop being noble when he becomes suspect to the crime. From the moment Tiresias tells Oedipus that The rotting canker in the State is you., Oedipus noble search becomes a personal one in which he can not refrain from settling his curiosity. It especially shined on the character Rhoda’s motives for her behaviors. According to Freud’s theory, ego is when you are out of your childhood level and actually take in consideration for other people more than yourself. However, Rhoda does not display any ego in herself as she does not give any consideration for other people in reality. The Freud’s theory also states that ID is when you are at a baby’s level and don’t know anything of what’s going on in reality and just whine for what you want. Rhoda’s behavior strongly amplifies ID because she is extremely childlike and spoiled. She is also self-serving and wants everything at that moment while taking no considerations for other people around her. Trying to be perfect is defined as superego according to the Freudian theory and this also has no part when describing Rhoda. It’s because she is not even trying to be a perfect self which equals a weak superego. On the other hand, Rhoda’s mother Christine is more on the superego side because of her thought of having a perfect family but ended up realizing that she herself is not a perfect woman. She notices this during her unconscious stage. According to the Freudian theory that was studied, Rhoda’s ID overpowering her ego and superego is what’s wrong with her. Also, she obviously cares more about herself than others in reality. In the Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, most of Rhoda’s basic needs are actually met. Rhoda definitely does not meet the level of self-actualization because she has no desire for self-fulfillment and growth. She also meets the level of esteem and belonging because every adult sees her as a perfect little girl on the outside and all of her family members love her. Safety is probably the need that is met at the highest quality because Rhoda lives in a nice and peaceful neighborhood while having a father that is a colonel in the national military. Her physiological or basic needs are met helped by her family’s fortune and being spoiled herself. Rhoda’s behavior disproves Maslow’s theories about humankind’s essential nature because this particular theory is more to healthy people rather than someone who is mentally ill. There are many arguments going on about whether evil comes from hereditary or genetic mind rather than from the environment that one lives in. According to the movie â€Å"The Bad Seed†, evil can come from both genetic mind and the environment. For example, it is revealed that Christine actually came from parents that were murders and was adopted by normal parents at a young age. Christine eventually grows up to an adult that is very mature and kind who would never have a single thought about killing anyone for any purpose. If evil was to be based on only genetics, wouldn’t Christine have ended up becoming a dangerous killer following her parent’s footsteps? Instead because Christine lived in a safe and benevolent environment that she is the complete opposite to her parents. However, even though Rhoda lived in a perfectly nice environment she still ended up becoming mentally ill. This could have been a genetic problem as Rhoda’s grandmother was a dangerous killer and could have passed on the heredity to Rhoda reason being her so vicious to others. The ideas presented in â€Å"The Bad Seed† were seen shocking to audiences in the 1950’s because people obviously think that a criminal mind is from their environment instead of genetics or heredity. However, the movie provided some evidence that criminal minds could actually develop genetically as Rhoda was to her grandmother. This possible proof shocked the audience because most probably believed the idea wasn’t even thought of during the time.

On Sunday afternoons in every major city many families go to the zoo with kids. They always have a lot of fun, see many rare animals, funny monkeys, tall giraffes, huge elephants and cute koalas. But what is going on with animals? On the one hand, animals are safe in zoos, which means they cannot be hurt in their cages. Secondly, animals have enough food, for example, they can always eat in a zoo, while they may be starving in nature. Furthermore, many poachers kill animals for their skin, fur and meat, but they cannot do it to animals in zoos. What is more, there are many species that are almost exterminated, but zoos help them reproduce and keep their species existing. The last but not least, if the natural habitat of some species is destroyed, ruined or is no longer for living in, zoos make cages that look exactly like the natural habitat. On the other hand, animals are kept away from their natural place of living. For instance, lions can never live in Berlin. Another major disadvantage of keeping animals imprisoned is too much noise and stress for them. Many people come to see them. It was like nothing I had heard before. It was not often played on the radio, and is still not. But whenever I heard it, I knew that was the music that I was born to listen. I always listen to music when I drive, walk to class, or go to the gym.I also listen music at home on the television sometimes. There is not a day that passes by when I do not listen to music. Therefore, I believe that music has an extremely great influence on my thoughts, moods, and behavior. Different types of music can drastically alter my thoughts, moods, and behavior. I am my music. More appropriately, my music represents my eccentric nature. My love for house music is endless. I suppose you can say I am a fan of strange music but for me I `m fan of good music.In my opinion good music is a song that has the capability to create strong feelings. The good music can stimulates excitement, ecstasy or nostalgia, it is one that triggers an emotion. As far back as I can remember I have always loved good music and my ipod has always been my most faithful companion. The eclectic nature of my kind of music has taught me to never judge people superficially but view them in depth. I cannot describe myself very good at this point because of my lack of knowledge in English but what I can tell you that, my passion is house music.You can ask yourself is house music a â€Å"good music† or not. Different Types of Isolines in Geography Topographic maps use a wide variety of symbols to represent human and physical features, including isolines, which are often used on maps to represent points of equal value. The Basics of Isolines and Contour Lines Isolines, also referred to as contour lines, can be used to represent elevation on a map by connecting points of equal elevation, for instance. These imaginary lines provide a good visual representation of  the terrain. As with all isolines, when contour lines lie close together, they represent a steep slope; lines far apart represent a gradual slope. But isolines can also be used to show other variables on a map besides terrain, and in other themes of study. For example, the first map of Paris used isolines to depict population distribution in that city, rather than physical geography. Maps using isolines and their variations have been used by astronomer Edmond Halley (of Halleys comet) and by doctor John Snow to better understand an 1854 cholera epidemic in England. This program focuses on encouraging the youth to shun any form of sexual interaction and teach on the dangers of unprotected sex such as unplanned pregnancies and incurable STIs in a bid to scare the youth straight so to speak. They do not offer any alternatives on how one is able to practice safe sex if they do decide to engage in such activities and mostly paint a scary picture on the consequences of having sex at an early age. The program has mostly been promoted by the conservative groups in the country including most religious factions as they feel any other mode of sex education will be in effect promoting the engaging of sexual activities among the youth (Cook & Clarke 236). Two detective stories Essay I am going to compare and contrast two short stories, written by two different authors but they are both detective stories. The two stories were written in different times by two very different people.  Sara Paretsky, the author of Three-Dot Po, was born in the middle of the twentieth century and is still alive and writing books today. She has a good education; she has a degree in Political science, a PhD in history and has received an MBA from the University of Chicago. She has published 11 novels in several languages, 9 short stories, and 6 essays and has received numerous awards for her writing. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the author of The Speckled Band, was born in 1859 and died in 1930. He wrote in a very different time and society to the ones that Sara Paretsky writes in. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle qualified as a doctor and practised medicine, he was well educated and respected in his profession, however he preferred to write mystery stories. He was the first writer in the nineteenth century to have the same characters in his stories but different stories each week.  Both writers were/are respected in their fields of work and although they both had different backgrounds they had at least one thing in common, they both wrote murder mysteries that included the same characters but different stories in each edition. Both stories were aimed at the same audience range, however The speckled band may appear slightly more to an adult audience. Both Three-Dot Po and The speckled band are structured in the same way, they are both short stories. Although they both have a different under lying structure. Three-Dot Po is a methodical story and takes you step by step through what the character is going through, whereas The speckled band builds up to a climax and leaves you puzzled and confused up until the end. Each story has a different narrator in Three-Dot Po it is the detective herself, Vic Warshawski. Her character is an ex lawyer turned private detective, this means she has alot of experience in solving crimes. The narrator in the speckled band is Dr Watson, Sherlock Holmess sidekick. The tone in Three-Dot Po is quite relaxed and informal, not as dramatic as the speckled band. The tone of the speckled band is serious, dramatic and is ironic as the detective kills the murderer. The language of each story supports the tone; for example the language in The speckled band is formal, descriptive and old fashioned. Which supports the serious tone of the story. Also the language used in Three-Dot Po is informal, descriptive, modern and in first person. This also supports the informal tone of the story. The story is told, well and with the added use of imagery this helps to portray the meaning and thought behind the story. The use of imagery in Three-Dot Po is very good especially with the description of the scenery snow blowing across in fine pelting particles like a desert storm. The use of imagery is likewise very stereotypical of a methodical story. In each story the crime committed is a murder, but these murders are told in different formats. The murder in Three-Dot Po was a story killing and the murder in the speckled band was a mystery killing. There is another contrast in the murders, in Three-Dot Po it is a human being that killed the victim whereas in the speckled band it is a snake that commits the actual murders. There is yet another contrast in the stories to do with the murders and that is when it comes to the suspects. There is only one real suspect in Three-Dot Po and that is the victims boyfriend, Jonathan Michaels. Whereas in The speckled band there seem to be many suspects which include Dr Roylett, the gypsies and the cheetah and the baboon. There are many clues in each story, in Three-Dot Po there is an empty film tube left by the body, the sighting of the man in the ski mask, the phone call made to the victim shortly before she died and the break in at the flat. However in The speckled band the clues are much more suspicious and thought provoking. There is the fact that The character Helen Stone had to change rooms for a non-existent reason, the strange animals that roam around (the cheetah and baboon), her bad was nailed to the floor, the dummy bell pull, the whistling at night, the safe, milk and lead in the Doctors room, the last words spoken by the victim and the bars on the windows. All of these things are rather bizarre and therefore conclude to a twisted web of deceit. An additional contrast between the two stories is the detectives and sidekicks themselves. The detective in Three-Dot Po is a woman who is friendly, brave and not self disciplined. Whereas the detective in The speckled band is a self disciplined, inquisitive, observant, dedicated, arrogant and very clever man. The sidekicks are equally different; the sidekick in Three-Dot Po is Three-Dot Po, a dog. He is very determined, devoted and brave. He is also a useful warning system, e.g. when the burglar breaks in. However the sidekick in The speckled band is Dr Watson, who is also the narrator, he, unlike Three-Dot Po is a human but he has dog like qualities. He is faithful, respectful, in awe of Holmes and willing to help. The penultimate contrast in these stories is in the ending. Three-Dot Po has a happy ending; the wrong is put right however it isnt a conclusive ending, as we dont find out what happens to the characters after the event. It is also very predictable and quite cheesy. The ending in The speckled band is the opposite, the way in which the story is told makes it so that the ending is totally unpredictable and conclusive. Holmes doesnt seem to care that Dr Roylett is dead and acts with a clean conscience. The final contrast is with the settings of the stories. Three-Dot Po is set in America in Michigan City in the twentieth century and The speckled band is set in a rural part of London, England. This play was written in 1883. The final similarity between these two stories is that both of the stories are relevant to the times in which they were written. For example in 1883 there wouldnt have been motorised transport and this is picked up on when Sherlock refers to the use of a dog-cart. Another example is in Three-Dot Po, the murderer is a Spanish drug dealer, this is typical of the twentieth century. The use of drugs is common and the fact that a drug dealer is involved in a murder is not a great shock to anyone.  These two stories have many contrasts but they also have many similarities, they are both great stories for there times and were written by great-accomplished writers.

Tips to Increase Parental Involvement in Education True school reform will always begin with an increase in parental involvement in education. It has been proven time and time again that parents who invest time and place value on their child’s education will have children who are more successful in school. Naturally there are always exceptions, but teaching your child to value education cannot help but have a positive impact on their education. Schools understand the value that involved parents bring and most are willing to take the necessary steps to help boost parental involvement.   This naturally takes time. It should begin in elementary schools where parental involvement is naturally better. Those teachers must build relationships with parents and have conversations about the importance of maintaining a high level of involvement even through high school. School administrators and teachers are continuously frustrated in an age where parental involvement increasingly seems to be on the decline. Part of this frustration lays in the fact that society often places sole blame on the teachers when in truth there is a natural handicap if parents are not doing their part. There is also no denying that each individual school is affected by parental involvement at varying levels. Schools with more parental involvement are almost always the higher-performing schools when it comes to standardized testing. The question is how do schools increase parental involvement? The reality is that many schools are never going to have 100% parental involvement. However, there are strategies that you can implement to increase parental involvement significantly. Improving parental involvement in your school will make teachers’ jobs easier and improve student performance overall. Education Increasing parental involvement begins with having the capacity to educate parents on the ins and outs of how to be involved and why it is important. The sad reality is that many parents simply do not know how to be truly involved with their child’s education because their parents were not involved with their education. It is essential to have educational programs for parents that offer them tips and suggestions explaining how they can get involved. These programs must also focus on the benefits of increased involvement. Getting parents to attend these training opportunities can be challenging, but many parents will attend if you offer food, incentives, or door prizes. Communication There are many more avenues available to communicate because of technology (email, text, social media, etc.) than what there were just a few years ago. Communicating with parents on a continual basis is a key ingredient to increasing parental involvement. If a parent isn’t going to take the time to keep track of their child, then the teacher should make every effort to inform those parents of their child’s progress. There is a chance that the parent will just ignore or tune these communications out, but more times than not the message will be received, and their level of communication and involvement will improve. This is also a way to build trust with parents ultimately making a teacher’s job easier. Volunteer Programs Many parents simply believe that they have minimal responsibilities when it comes to their child’s education. Instead, they believe that it is the primary responsibility of the school and of the teacher. Getting these parents to spend a little time in your classroom is a fantastic way to change their mindset on this. While this approach will not work for everyone everywhere, it can be an effective tool to increase parental involvement in many cases. The idea is that you recruit a parent who is minimally involved in their child’s education to come up and read a story to the class. You immediately invite them back again to lead something like an art activity or anything in which they are comfortable. Many parents will find that they enjoy this type of interaction, and their children will love it, particularly those in early elementary school. Continue to involve that parent and give them more responsibility each time. Pretty soon they will find themselves valuing their child’s education more as they become more invested in the process. Open House/Game Night Having periodic open house or game nights is an excellent way to get parents involved with their child’s education. Don’t expect everyone to attend, but make these events dynamic events that everyone enjoys and talks about. This will lead to increased interest and eventually greater participation. The key is to have meaningful learning activities that force parent and child to interact with each other throughout the night. Again offering food, incentives, and door prizes will create a bigger draw. These events take a lot of planning and effort to do them right, but they can be powerful tools for building relationships, learning, and increasing involvement. Home Activities Home activities can have some effect in increasing parental involvement. The idea is to send home activity packs periodically throughout the year that requires the parents and child to sit down and do together. These activities should be short, engaging, and dynamic. They should be easy to conduct and contain all materials needed to complete the activity. Science activities are traditionally the best and easiest activities to send home. Unfortunately, you cannot expect all parents to complete the activities with their child, but you hope that the majority of them will.
